How to Care for Your Shoes
Genuine leather shoes keep their shape for years with regular conditioning and proper storage. The basics below will help you maintain their shine and suppleness.
Do's
- Wipe off the dust with a soft cloth after every wear
- Apply leather conditioner once a month and let it sit for 10 minutes
- If they get wet, stuff them with newspaper and dry at room temperature
- Use a shoetree to help them hold their shape
- Store them somewhere dry and well ventilated
Don'ts
- Drying them in direct sunlight or on a radiator
- Using harsh detergent or a washing machine
- Wiping or polishing them while the leather is wet
- Storing them in a plastic bag (no airflow, invites mould)
- Applying a cream in a colour that does not match the leather
Suede is a delicate material. It needs to be protected from water and stains. With the right brush and spray it stays vibrant for years.
Do's
- Use a brass-bristle suede brush, and brush only when dry
- Apply a water-repellent spray before the first wear
- Lift stains gently with a dry suede eraser
- If they get wet, let them dry naturally at room temperature
- Store them in a closed, dust-free box
Don'ts
- Washing them with water or wiping them with a damp cloth
- Scrubbing them with a stiff brush or metal bristles
- Applying leather conditioner (it will stain the nap)
- Drying them in the sun (the colour fades)
- Wearing them in the rain again and again
